How to stop doomscrolling
Endless feeds are designed so you never reach the end. These seven steps help you break the habit without quitting the internet.
Doomscrolling is the habit of scrolling through feeds long after it stopped being useful or fun. It happens on Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, X and the news, and it often starts with a tiny reason: one message, one video, one headline.
Why it's so hard to stop
Feeds have no last page. Each swipe might bring something new, and that unpredictability is what keeps your thumb moving. You are not weak. You are using a product that is extremely good at its job.
1. Catch the trigger
Most scrolling starts in the same moments: right after finishing a task, when something feels hard or when you are tired. Notice yours for a day.
2. Add a pause before the feed
The habit lives in the first second. If something stops you before the feed loads and asks why you came, the autopilot breaks. Flowly does exactly this for Instagram, TikTok and other sites on your list.
3. Block feeds during work hours
Decide in advance when feeds are off. A schedule removes the daily debate.
4. Keep a reason in mind
If you open a site for one message, answer it and close the tab. Giving yourself a 5 minute window helps.
5. Replace the reflex
When the urge hits, do something small instead: stand up, refill your water, write the next line of your task.
6. Look at your numbers
Seeing how much time went to scrolling makes the habit concrete. A daily report with your top distraction is often a wake-up call.
7. Scroll on purpose
You don't have to quit social media. Pick a time for it, enjoy it and stop when the time is up.
Start small: block the one feed you lose the most time to, only during your work hours, for one week.
