How to use the Pomodoro timer

  1. 1

    Pick one task

Decide what this session is for before you press Start. One task, not a to-do list.

  2. 2

    Focus for 25 minutes

Work only on that task until the timer rings. If a thought pulls you away, write it down and continue.

  3. 3

    Take a 5 minute break

Stand up, drink water, look away from the screen. The timer switches to a break by itself.

  4. 4

    Long break after four

After four focus sessions, take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes.

A timer is half the job

The Pomodoro technique only works if the 25 minutes stay clean. One quick look at YouTube or Instagram and the session is gone, even if the timer keeps running.

That is why Flowly has a focus timer built into Chrome. Press 25, 45 or 60 minutes and your distracting sites stay closed until the session ends. Reach for one anyway and Flowly asks why. Read the full guide to the Pomodoro technique.

What is a Pomodoro timer?

A Pomodoro timer splits your work into focused sessions, usually 25 minutes, with short breaks in between. After four sessions you take a longer break. The method was created by Francesco Cirillo.

Can I change the length of the sessions?

Yes. Open Settings under the timer and set your own focus, short break and long break lengths. Many people prefer 45 or 50 minute sessions for deep work.

Does the timer keep running in a background tab?

Yes. The timer is based on the clock, so it stays accurate when you switch tabs. The remaining time is also shown in the tab title.

Is this timer free?

Yes, completely free, with no account and no ads. Your settings are saved only in your browser.

How do I stop distractions during a session?

Install Flowly. It blocks the sites you choose while a focus session is running and shows a short pause when you try to open one.
